With the rapid development of VLSI, the performance of DSP (digital signal processor) has been improved greatly. Therefore the times of image processing based embedded application is coming. However, the market also need such kind embedded systems have the characteristics of the less space and power consumption and the ability of updating and maintenance. Reading pen system wants to implement such features: scanning the text document, recognize it, translate them into desired language and finally restored them into the pen. Our reading pen is aim to the market of the portable consuming electronically products with the characteristics of cost, size and power consumption savings. In this paper, we discussed the key technologies in the process of design and implement the reading pen. We extend our paper in the directions of algorithm design, hardware design and software design.In algorithm design, this paper discussed how to design effective image algorithms under the condition of limited hardware resource and high quality requirements. In paper the medium width based Chinese character segmentation algorithm and improved histogram based English character segmentation algorithm have been proposed. These algorithms improved the speed of segmentation process under keep the segmentations precision. In English character feature generation process, we used 64 dimension KL transform coefficients as features of classification. In recognition process, we used RBF neural network as a classifier to classify English characters and digits. In RBF neural network, 64 dimension features as input. Reading Pen trained the neural network on PC and used it on DSP;the classifier has achieved high accuracy in English and digits recognition.In hardware design, this paper based on the reading pen hardware design process, discussed some key technologies in how to implement the power saving and small size features in embedded systems. Also In the paper, we designed an AA battery supplied high efficiency step-up voltage power. It brings the reading pen into portable.In software design, we designed a boot loader for reading pen hardware and implemented the feature of self-loading. In this paper, we also designed a file system for NAND FLASH. The file system implemented the high level abstract of hardware for embedded system development. The file system also improves the usability of the reading pen.
