In order to adapt the demand of the information-based battle, the troops should strengthen the masterial management system construction strongly, carrying out the target of the material management automation as soon as possible. In the course of Information drive being transformed, it is one of indispensable conditions for each unit to have a reasonable, safe, reliable and expanding MIS (Management Information System). At present, most of MIS are based on client/server architecture that is often called two-tier architecture. With the complexity of structure and expansion of scale in MIS, C/S architecture exposes its structural defects little by little. To face new competitions and improve management technology, we can use more advanced technology to meet the need of management. Late years, computer software and hardware's fast development provides a good, outer support to that need. So multi-tier architecture comes to follow. Multi-tier architecture develops the traditional C/S architecture and stands for enterprise application's future. Compared with C/S architecture, Multi-tier architecture has more advantages: smart hardware system, supporting distributed environment, more maintainable programs, reliable security management and thin-client. In addition, simple system management and supporting different databases, good operating.Presently, there are three technologies that can implement multi-tier architecture. They are CORBA (OMG), COM and DOOM (Microsoft) and J2EE (Sun). J2EE is a system architecture that uses Java2 platform to simplify the complex problem related to development, deployment and management in enterprise solutions. It provides middle-tier integration to meet not much expense, more usable, more reliable and expanding demands. By providing united platform, J2EE architecture reduces the expense and complexity in developing multi-tier applications and also has a good support to present applications integration. This paper discusses a material management system based on J2EE. Its user interface completely uses thin-client model. Using multi-tier architecture will improve the performance and security of systems, and also strengthen the stability and reuses. Moreover, thin-client can avoid the defects being generated when lots of clients work.
