GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) is a new kind of data service designedfor digital cellular networks (GSM, DCS, PCS). The packet switching protocolrealizes the transportation of user's packet data (such as IP and X.25 packets) by theway of Point-to-Point, Point-to-Multipoint, or Point-to-Network. The packetswitching mode is much more efficient compared with circuit switching mode interms of data service.Firstly, the network structure, protocol, and signalling of GPRS were introduced.Meanwhile, the structure and function of Motorola GPRS devices were concerned aswell since the author's working circumstance. Secondly, this thesis stressed on the airinterface key factors which can influence the throughput of GPRS and how the keyfactors affect the GPRS performance. Moreover, the relevant solutions were discussedin details. The third part of this thesis focused on the effect of coding scheme on theGPRS throughput and the experimental scenario was provided. Finally, the utilizationof CS-3 and CS-4 coding scheme was suggested towards CMCC.tj GPRS network. The construction of CMCC.tj GPRS network was launched form 2002 and last twoyears time to complete. During the period, the author was involved and participated inthe job of feasibility research, project design, network construction, modification, trouble shooting and technical support. The GPRS network and relative technologywas systemically and comprehensively researched, and many practical issues wereencountered and solved in the past a couple of years. It made a significantcontribution for the development of CMCC.tj GPRS network.
