With the development of technology, traditional electronic design methods are giving way to the new ones. The appearance and development of programmable logic device (PLD) and hardware description language, for example, has greatly transformed the way of the design and implement of digital systems, and as a result more and more digital signal processing systems are being built with PLD.As an important branch of digital signal processing technology, digital filters have been widely used in various fields. Finite impulse response (FIR) filter, because of such unique features as one zero, stability, linear phase, and design flexibility, were used frequently in many engineering problems.In this paper,according to the basic theory of FIR filters, by studying FPGA internal structure, and incorporating structural digital design principles in software engineering and features in hardware description language, we accomplished the design of a ninth-order FIR low-pass digital filter using EP1K30TC144-3 from Altera. From the clew of implementing a stratified, modular design, the filter was divided into several modules, each implemented with VHDL.In order to carry out the course and conclusion of the design more evidently. I have described design process of nuclear and peripheral hardware circuit detailedly in the paper, and parameterized FIR filter based on FPGA have been accomplished in the end.The experiment results show that the function of the design in the thesis is correct and been up to design par. Following the procedure and choosing proper parameters and hardware, other kinds of filters as high-pass and band-pass digital filters could be constructed with easy. It show that the design in the thesis is representative.
