In recent years, with the continuous development of Internet technology, it is possible for remote supervisory and control of production process. Based on the project for the reconstruction of hydro power station automation, a scheme for the remote supervisory and control based on VPN technology is proposed. Then the remote supervisory and control system based on VPN is developed and applied successfully to hydro power station.Firstly, recent research on the remote supervisory and control in domestic and foreign country is introduced in brief. Aiming at the characteristics that small hydroelectric power stations mostly are set up in remote areas and no people are on duty, the communication solution based on instable communication medium is designed. Remote supervisory system can automatically diagnose all kinds of communication abnormities and errors, and initiatively restore or automatically protect the normal operations of device. Secondly, video supervisory subsystem and data supervisory subsystem are designed and realization in detail. In term of the features of small network bandwidth, optimization designs are used to enhance the reliability of real-time supervisory. Because network security is taken into account by more and more people, VPN based on PPTP is designed on heterogeneous platform and applied to remote supervisory and control system. VPN can create private network connections over public networks, provide secure and reliable Internet accesses service. Web service is the new distributed computation technology, which is the focus of IT field today. The management platform based on web service is designed. The target of web service is realized, which is seamlessintegration among heterogeneous components on heterogeneous platforms. The remote supervisory and control system of computer network has been applied to hydro power station in Bei'ao, Xianju county, Zhejiang province. There are characteristics such as friendly interface, high reliability, easy operation, security and stabilization. The results of application show that it is fit for not only the supervisory and control of hydro power station, but also industry control, tour service, traffic supervisory, cky management and so on. Moreover, it can remarkably improve the level of control and management in these domains and reduce the operation cost. It has the extremely important theory significance and engineering application values.
