The Reverse Engineering (RE) is more and more used in machine, rapid prototype, sculpture, physic, topography etc. It has attracted considerable research attention in CAD/CAM. Its core subject is the reconstruction of sculptured surface. Bezier and NURBS are chosen as the fundamental method to achieve surface reconstruction on the basis of fundamental theory of sculpture surface reconstruction. Then the fitting method of Bezier and NURBS surface reconstruction is given after the reconstruction algorism is discussed. And finally the blending surface and smooth patch are investigated. This paper includes such contents as:According to the features of RE, A software architecture which fits for RE is designed, whose function is given separately. The surface reconstruction module is programmed by VC++.The fundamental theory of surface reconstruction is further discussed which leads to the finding that there are some disadvantages in Bezier and NURBS. So both Bezier and NURBS are chosen as the fundamental methods to achieve surface reconstruction.Some different method is used to fulfill the Bezier and NURBS surface fitting. To the Bezier surface fitting, skimming is used after the cross-section line is fitted. Optimal design is brought to the modeling of NURBS surfaces to resolve practical problems. Lastly taking a specific example in this paper.The sorted blending method is discussed and can be used to boost the calculating; The G1 smooth patching of Bezier free-line is proposed at the end of the paper according to the joining of two adjacent NURBS surfaces along the common boundary.
