In recent years, occurrences of sudden public crisis are unforgettable to many people in China and in the world. Both of media industry and academia have a reflection on this problem and start the study on the function of mass media in government crisis management. In the modern information society, the responsibility and function of mass media have great changes in government crisis management. The analysis and exploration on the function of mass media in government crisis management have become an important issue of government crisis management.In the background of information globalization, the countries, regions and cities contact each other closer and closer. Their interaction and dependence of each other are increasing day by day either. This makes the crisis is easy to spread rapidly across geographical boundaries. When a government face to public crisis but cannot handle it, the crisis may evolve as a regional or global issue. So, success to cope with various public crises has become a test of governance and management. To deal with various crises successfully, we need the joint efforts of the government and mass media. Constructing the interaction of the government, the mass media and the public, is the important part of government crisis management..This paper is based on mass media in government crisis management, and analysis the function of mass media in government crisis management. Mass media as the carrier of information dissemination plays an indispensable role in the process of government crisis management. In this paper, I'll take the ice and snow disaster in 2008, "5·12"Wenchuan earthquake and "4·14"Yushu earthquake as examples, to analyze the function of mass media in government crisis management, and to sort out the problems of mass media in government crisis management. On this basis, finally, I'll give some positive explorations about strengthening the function of mass media in government crisis management.
