The growing demand of high bandwith and data rate multimedia services promote the rapid development of telecommunication networks. As one of the most important next-generation mobile communication technical standard, the technical specification of LTE has been finished, and the commercial development has been begun in many countries. According to the statistics, about 70% of the voice service and 90% of the data service happens in the indoor environment. Thus, in the future LTE network environment, indoor coverage will be focused undoubltly by the operators. However, due to the some inherent shortcomings of LTE networks, e.g. weak building penetration, service lots of users in a cell and complex configuration. Therefore, a flexible, low-cost and high efficiency method to improve indoor coverage andenhance the user experience has become the key concerns of operators around the world.Home eNodeB (HeNB), also known as FemtoCell, inherited the majority characteristics of eNodeB in LTE. It is mainly deployed at home and has the advantages of small, low-power, cheap and very easy to be installed etc. HeNB has become a key method to enhance the indoor coverage and improve the user experience. It must have a broad development prospects. As most of the HeNB deployed in the indoor, operators lost the control ability. At the same time, the number of HeNB is enormous, which caused the traditional configuration management has been unable to meet the requirements of HeNB configuration management. Therefore, self-configuration management technology will become the key for the HeNB and the research of HeNB self-configuration has the important significance.According to the characteristics of HeNB, the background of HeNB emergence and the needs of configuration management are discussed firstly. After that, the three problems (Self-management architecture, procedure and information model) of HeNB self-configuration management are proposed. Secondly, the three problems are researched deeply and the related solutions are proposed. Thirdly, the two key problems (S1 AP protocol extension and PCI Allocaion) of self-configuration management procedure are researched. Finally, according to the management architecture, procedure and information model are proposed, in addition, we design a configuration management system using TR069 protocol for HeNB to verify our proposed theory.
