This targets of this research is the hardware design and function test of Gigabit Ethernet (GbE) switch. In this thesis, the 24 ports Gigabit Ethernet switch is constructed with BCM53114S as the CPU/MAC,a new generation Gigabit Ethernet switch IC of broadcom company, supported by two BCM54684 PHY chips. In hardware design of this project, high integration PBGA chips are applied in modular design method with good effect of EMC.The most prominent feature is the Gigabit Ethernet is compatible to the existing 10/100M Ethernet, also provides sufficient protection for existing network infrastructure investment. It Supports layer-2 switching, network management, priority management of quality of service, port stacking management, and so on. It is Suitable for large-scale backbone network and the enterprise high-speed switching, as well as ordinary office and family daily network construction requirements. In this targets, firstly is the knowledge of the ethernet switch, such as ethernet switches types, characteristics, working principle, functions, etc. are reviwed. Then, the different design schemes are described and a better schemme is choiced to implement the designe, including the chips introduction, detailed hardware design, etc. At last, the function and safety standard test are carried out. The test results show that the final product 24 ports Gigabit Ethernet (GbE) switch realize all its functions and works well in safety.
