Because of the trend that multimedia materials be stored and expressed in digital format, 1GbE technologies have become a hot-spot in the access Networks area.This paper presents a extensible open software platform for management embedded Ethernet switches. The embedded system is based off of the Samsung S3C45 10B ARM7 CPU, It's switch Engine Vt65 10 deliver 2 Gigabit Ethernet ports and 8 l00Mbit/s Ethernet ports. ARM Connect to Switch Interface -External IO bank 1, External data bus bandwidth is 16 bits. Packet receive and transmit uses DMA mode. The software system is made up of several parts,including bios,the embedded Linux OS, the switch's driver software, and some upper level protocol software such as the IGMP Snooping Protocol. The first chapter introduces 1GbE Ethernet access technologies and requirements for the switches. The second chapter describes the design and functions of vt6510 hardware system. In the third chapter, the detailed design and implementation information of the embedded Linux OS is given. And then we described the structure and implementation of the switch application related software which runs over the Linux OS, Such as SNMP and IGMP Snooping function.
