Purpose: To evaluate the clinical efficacy of Run Ming granule combined with Artificial Tears. To provide characterized treatment for middle-aged and elderly patients of dry eye.Materials and Methods: This research adopts group-control method to randomize 62 qualified patients(124 eyes) into group receiving Run Ming granule combined with Artificial Tears(test group) and group receiving Artificial Tears only(control group). Either group contains 31 patients(62 eyes). Test group was provided with Artificial Tears(0.1% concentration of Sodium Hyaluronate Eye Drop) which was used as one eye one drop for six times per day and Run Ming granule which was taken twice a day with hot water, every morning and night. Control group was provided with Artificial Tears(0.1% concentration of Sodium Hyaluronate Eye Drop), one eye one drop for six times per day. Both treatments last for one month. The clinical efficacy evaluation will be conducted prior to the treatment, half month after the completion of medication and one month after the completion of medication with the following parameters: OSDI, SIt, TBUT, CFS etc. Results: 1. In comparision of general efficacy, overall efficacy of test group is 89.66% while, overall efficacy of control group is 73.33% after one-month treatment, which means efficacy of test group is superior to that of control group(P<0.05). 2. Both group present significant difference after one-month treatment with regard to OSDI while test group is superior to control group(P<0.05) 3.Both group present significant difference after one-month treatment with regard to SIt while SIt of test group almost approaches to normal leve(P<0.05). 4. Both group present significant difference after one-month treatment with regard to TBUT while test group is superior to control group(P<0.05). 5.Both group present significant difference after one-month treatment with regard to CFS while no statistical significance exists between two groups(P=0.27>0.05)Conclusions: Either Run Ming granule combined with Artificial Tears or Artificial Tears only has positive clinical efficacy in treating dry eye. Both can improve the patients’ self-conscious symptoms, increase SIt and enhance the tear film stability. But treatment with Run Ming granule combined with Artificial Tears has better clinical efficacy than treatment with Artificial Tears only which can also increase SIt and prolong TBUT. In addition, treatment with Run Ming granule combined with Artificial Tears can relieve general signs and symptoms from the patients, which is also worth verifying and marketing.
