Digital TV is the third generation TV after black and white TV and color TV. High definition television (HDTV) is the top grade of digital television. Through the digital HDTV Set-top box, we can receive the digital high definition TV program with HDTV or digital standard definition TV program with analog TV.The purpose of the paper is to research and implement the source decoder's hardware of new generation HDTV set-top box. We chose ST's HDTV source decoder solution with STi5514+STi7020. The hardware structure, the realizing principle of the STi7020 and audio/video IO system and the method of the PCB design are described in detail in this paper.The core of this part is STi7020 which is a highly integrated audio and video decoder for high-definition digital TV, digital set-top box application. It integrates an MPEG MP@HL video decoder, a DSP based multistandard audio decoder with PCM mixing, a 7 plane dual output graphics compositor with 3 graphics planes, a 2D graphics accelerator,2 video display pipelines and 2 video timing generators for dual program watch and record or dual program display in a PIP or POP configuration, a digital video encoder. The STi7020 can concurrently decode up to 5 SD video streams or 2 HD video streams or 1 HD video stream and 1 SD video stream.This system provides analog HD YPrPb, analog SD CVBS, S-Video, digital HD DVI output . 5.1 channel audio and 2-channel audio outputs are also provided. Externally sourced video and audio can also be input for mixing and presentation.
