| As a special field of Information Technologies (IT), Geographical Information System (GIS) plays a more and more important role in the information society, while Component software technology is a new kind of software engineering technology that developed after and as an extension of the Object Oriented technology, and it has already become one of the mainstreams in the development of software technologies today.Component GIS is a kind of application of Object Oriented technology and component software technology in GIS software development. It has many advantages that the traditional GIS lacks, therefore, it provides totally new idea and method to solve the problems the traditional GIS faces. ComGIS system will be the important direction in the development of GIS in furture. ComGIS does not depend on the specific program language, in which the function of GIS is completed by the GIS'OCX and the special function can be accomplished by developing on or embedding special OCX in General Visual Development Environment (such as VB, VC and PB).In this paper, the development of Geographical Information System and the current research hot topics were reviewed, the principles of component technology and its features, the structure of the component GIS. As well as it expatiates on the software technologies concerning Components-Based Development which include component object model(COM), Distribute component object model(DCOM), object linking and embedding (OLE)andActiveX.Moreover, the paper introduces correlative content about ComGIS, including the characteristic and framework of ComGIS, programming and development about ComGIS. And a ComGIS software tool, MapObjects from ESRI, is introduced in detail.Finally the Area Management Information System for Pollution Source is introduced in this paper, which integrates MapObjects with Visual Basic. The content includes the design of object, system design, function and database, programming and application in the management of pollution source.
