All optical wavelength converter (AOWC) based on SOA-XGM has been paid more attention because of its virtues such as simple structure, easy integration with other photoelectric devices, fast response, wide frequency range for conversion, insensitive polarization, etc. So it has become the hot point in the field of optical communications. From the models of SOA-XGM converter and segmented SOA, the interior carrier density and output extinction ratio have been simulated by using the carrier rate equations and the propagation equations of signal and probe inside SOA. The experiment system of AOWC has been constructed, and the wavelength is converted from 1530nm to 1550nm. The efficient cavity length of vertical cavity semiconductor optical amplifier (VCSOA) is calculated with the theory of phase penetrating. The results show that the response rate of SOA can be increased with larger bias current, more input optical power. With larger signal power, smaller probe power, suitable conversion interval and downwards conversion mode, the output extinction ratio can be enhanced. The phase penetrating depth varies fast when the difference of relative refractive index in distributed Bragg reflectors (DBR) between 0.05 and 0.2, and it increases with DBR's period number. The actual gain peak value is much smaller than the simplified mode of F-P cavity, but the effect is light to the full width at half maximum with the mode of efficient cavity length. The interchange and relative intensity noise of transmitted subassembly are tested respectively. The forming of basic mode is discussed in the ultra short distance of the single-mode fiber. The test data indicates two feasible methods to control the interchange, which can enhance the matching between the optical field of LD and the basic mode field, and increase the stub length. The results will be useful for the packing of transmitted subassembly.
