Tunable All-Optical Wavelength Converter is the key element in next generation intelligent all-optical networks. High-precision, ultra-stable, high-integrated and ease for wavelength tuning and their modularization design are very important to their applications in the future. Financed by National 863 project and Wuhan Youth Chengguang Project, an AWOC module with excellent performance is illustrated in detail from the hardware design to the software design in this thesis. The main work of this project is listed as follows: (1) Several operation mechanisms of different tunable All-Optical Wavelength Converters are compared and discussed. The mechanism of tunable wavelength conversion based on Cross-Gain modulation (XGM) in Semiconductor Optical Amplifier (SOA) is discussed in detail. The design scheme of the whole module based on the single-port XGM-SOA is presented. (2) The structure of the super structure grating distributed Bragg reflector laser is analysed in detail. The principle of the wavelength conversion is investigated and numerous simulated. (3) After comparing the characteristics of several kinds of circuits, the circuits including the exact temperature control circuit, constant current driving circuit and the tunable laser control circuit are designed and fabricated. The test shows that these circuits are stable and reliable. (4) The tunable laser control software is completed with the Matlab. Through the serial port communication with the computer, operation parameters of the module could be monitoried and controlled. The software has the excellent user interface with stable operation characteristics. (5) The parameters of the module are experimental investigated. For 10Gb/s tunable wavelength converter, the output wavelength could be tuned from 1528nm to 1563nm. Operating at proper conditions, the output extinction ratio could be higher than 10dB and the conversion efficiency could be higher than 0dB for the whole tuning range.
