With the rapid increase in the demand for communication capacity and rate, the traditional electronic communication network has been unable to reach the expected requirements, and we can fully effective utilize all-optical network which has wider bandwidth and higher rate to realize the high-speed and large capacity information transmission. In all optical wavelength division multiplexing networks, the most critical devices are all optical wavelength converter(AOWC), which can realize the functions of optical switch, optical switch and optical routing with different wavelength. In the scheme of all-optical wavelength converter, all-optical wavelength converter based on semiconductor optical amplifiers(SOA)will play an important role in future all optical wavelength division multiplexing networks,due to its high conversion efficiency, wide bandwidth, simple system structure, easy to realize, and other advantages.In this paper, we do theoretical and experimental study of all-optical wavelength converter based on SOA, and design of the wavelength division multiplexing system based on this wavelength converter, and do experimental research of it, the main research contents are as follows:(1) We do theoretical design and experimental study of all-optical wavelength converter based on the cross gain modulation(XGM) of the semiconductor optical amplifier(SOA).We design the experimental architecture of the wavelength converter based on SOA, and analyzed effect of signal optical power, pump power, SOA bias current and other parameters on the output extinction ratio and optical signal to noise ratio and other performance. We also optimize the performance parameters of the output signal of the wavelength converter according to the experimental results, which makes the output performance of the wavelength converter can be achieved.(2) We built a 3 channel wavelength division multiplexing system based on all optical wavelength converter of SOA, and also do experimental verification of it, as well as analysisand measure the optical extinction ratio and the optical signal to noise ratio. The experimental results show that the wavelength division multiplexing system based on all optical wavelength converter has good optical signal to noise ratio and output extinction ratio, and it can be well used in all optical networks.This project hopes to provide a new way of thinking for the design of all optical wavelength division multiplexing network, and we believe it can be widely used in the future.
