All-optical wavelength converter (AOWC) is one of the key components in wavelength division multiplexing optical networks. It can efficiently solve the wavelength blocking problem in the networks, increase the utilization efficiency of wavelengths, simplify the management of the networks, and enhance the adaptability to failure of the networks. Wavelength conversion based on semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) has attracted a lot of research interest recently due to its low power consumption and high conversion bit rate. In this paper, wavelength conversions based on cross-gain modulation (XGM) and cross-phase modulation (XPM) in SOA are studied both in theory and computer simulation.(l).The extinction ratio and chirp of SOA-XGM converter are analyzed theoretically and simulated. In-phase output of the signal light and probe light is realized by using an optical band-pass filter (OBF) with the central wavelength that is red shifted compared to the central wavelength of the probe signal. The influences of input power, wavelength conversion range, injection currents of the SOA, length of the SOA, optical confine factor of the SOA and factors of the filter on extinction ratio and chirp of conversion light are studied. Wavelength conversion with lOGb/s data rate and wide wavelength conversion range is realized after optimizing these factors.(2).The conversion characteristics of SOA-XPM converter are analyzed theoretically and simulated. The influences of input power, wavelength conversion range, injection currents of the SOA, length of the SOA and optical confine factor of the SOA on extinction ratio and bit error rate of conversion light are thoroughly studied. Wavelength conversion with 10GHz signal and wide wavelength conversion range is realized after optimizing these factors. The power penalty of the wavelength conversion is very small and can reach 3dB.All of the simulating research in this thesis is based on VPITransmissionmaker simulating platform and MATLAB simulating platform.
