The purpose design of traditional workflow architectures aims at providing full fledged support for the widest possible application spectrum. Consequently, most workflow management systems, both products and research prototypes, are heavyweight, monolithic, and package a comprehensive set of features in an all-or-nothing manner. Additionally, current workflow systems are hard to integrate with other environments. The solution to the previous problems introduced here is a lightweight workflow architecture that enables software developers to pick and choose the workflow features they need. At the core of the architecture, several components provide basic workflow functionality. Additional components implement advanced workflow features. The lightweight workflow architecture uses Enterprise Directory Service Component to build and manage organization model, application model and access control. The purpose design of lightweight workflow architectures is easy to integrate with other environments. With directory services provided by EDSC, the workflow manage system can share the same organization model, application model and access control with application systems. It help to lower integrate difficulty and shorten integrate time. We design and implement a relation-based Enterprise Directory Service Component. In this thesis, we introduce a lightweight process definition language SPDL. SPDL, based on XPDL, provides a efficiency way to describe process definition.A prototype system SmartFlow, based on the lightweight workflow architecture, lightweight process definition language and Web technology, is implemented. In this thesis, we introduce its architecture and realization technology. SmartFlow has been integrated in E-GOVERNMENT for Electric Power and Office Automation for TaikangLife. Through the actual inspection and user's feedbacks, the application system that adopted SmartFlow as the framework could dramatically shorten the development cycle of the process information application system, improved the user's efficiency.
