Vectorization, i.e.raster-to-vector conversion ,is the process of analyzing the scanned image of an engineering drawing in paper form and recognizing the graphic objects in the drawing, and finally, generating the vector format CAD file. Vectorization is the foundation of the activities of reusing old drawings and the automatic interpretation of engineering drawings. Therefore, it has been and still is a well-focused topic in CAD research field. This paper mainly researchs these parts:(1)The backgroud and the meaning of vectoriation of the engineering drawing are analyzed , then the deveopment and the present of the vectoriation technology are stated.(2)After analyzing the weakness of the past methods of smoothing the images, a adaptive method is proposed in the paper based on several sub-windows, it can maintain the image characters when removing the noise. In order to compress the image size and reduce the complexity of processing the image, after comparing with the former methods of binarization, the way of finding the threshold is optimized.(3)To adapt to programming, a thinning algorithm based on the index table is proposed, after analyzing the neighbouring piexels and researching many past algorithms. This paper performs a research on the simple and quick vectoriation that can recognize all kinds of graphic objects in the engineering drawings.(4)Design of graphics management system is combined with the practical project, which includes vectorization of engineering drawings and management of graphics.
