Engineering drawings are valuable wealth in factories and engineering academes, they can be reused or as a reference in a new designing project. Now CAD techniques get comprehensive applications, It's hope urgently that we can bring thousands of handcraft drawings and drawing files made in CAD system together and form an uniform digital graph database managed by computers. The simplest scanning input processing ,which use visions as input devices, make lines and characters transformed into binary pixel matrix . This system can not be compatible completely with new drawing files made in CAD system , and is no significances in geometry. The higher processing is making figures into vectors, i.e. vector quantization , then do some edits or modifications using CAD systems . The final drawing file through series of processing can be transferred each other with files made in CAD system .The paper mainly study a new vector quantization arithmetic used in Engineering drawing , Through analyzing handcraft drawings and comparing multiple vector quantization arithmetic. This arithmetic includes several steps :1 Pretreatment scanning drawings, including scanning drawing input , image rectification, wiping blue grounding, denoise,image enhancement and binarization process.2 Image vector quantization processing including automatic correction of incorrect vectorization of scanning straight lines, straight lines thinning, round and arc thinning identify, editing and modification drawings after vector quantization in CAD software .3 Summarize paper and provide new research directions and contents in scanning engineering drawing fields.
