Recognizing functional components in shop drawings is the important part of architectural drawing understanding, and looking back almost thirty years' research about it, there are limited achievements yet. The key problem is that the existing methods and computer aided architecture design are not well integrated, and the intelligence level of CAD is lower. In view of drawing understanding and integration of architectural CAD, this dissertation make a lot of analysis about engineering semantics of shop drawings and document data in architectural design files with DXF format, and put forward a method to recognize and understand functional components in shop drawings on the basis of design files' information.First, on the one hand, viewing how man draws and reads drawings, we analyze shop drawings hierarchically such as projection relation, expression mode and dimension restriction, and on the basis of it strategies of knowledge-based recognition and understand about functional components in shop drawings are introduced. The preparation for theories is ready. On the other hand, with parsing the format of architectural DXF file, we obtain the source of basic data with which functional components are recognized. The preparation for data is well done.Second, on the basis of analysis about characteristics of functional components' labels, a viewpoint come into being that labels' recognition is taken as the entrance to functional components' recognition. Then we analyze the probability of taking out functional components' labels from DXF files, and bring forward a extracting process of label texts from DXF file with the use of information about layers which directly reflect design thoughts, and a combination process of label texts into complete labels. Finally the unique mark of functional component is acquired. This offer a name list of functional components and limited initial information that can be used in the following rest work in functional components' recognition.
