Along with the development of the market economy and the finance modernization, the cash and certificates are replacing with cards. Tough IC card appears late, it has the best prospects. IC card will become the mainstream by superseding the cards using widely now, such as photoelectricity card, bar code card and magcard. IC card can be classified by the architecture. Memory card is constituted by EEPROM with capacity in KB dimension; IC card with programmable security code has logic security circuits besides EEPROM memory; CPU card is the most complicated one, it is the integration of CPU, program storage (ROM), data storage (EEPROM and RAM), commonly there is a COS (chip operating system) on the ROM. So it is obviously that EEPROM memory is very important for IC card. Design and realization of small capacity embedded EEPROM IP is studied in this paper. General design principle and design flow are analyzed based on the accomplishment of a 16Kb EEPROM IP. The circuit design of the 16Kb EEPORM IP mainly includes the following sections: I/O interface circuit, digital control logic, EEPROM array and special periphery circuits. They are divided into two parts: digital control logic circuits and analog macro circuits. Both schematic design and physical design of them are completed by full custom method. In this paper, a general description of the development of IP and nonvolatile memory, especially EEPROM memory, is first given. Then the fundamental principles, programming mechanism and array architecture of EEPORM memory are introduced in detail, the one adopted in this paper is also expatiated. Furthermore, the design flow of this IP is introduced, and the schematic design and physical layout design are described. In the end, a brief summary is given. The study is focused on the EEPROM special periphery circuits, including the charge pump, high voltage switch, sense amplifier and other related circuits.
