Manufacturing system layout design is one of the most important research areas of industry engineering. Layout design affects much including production efficiency, utilizing rate of factory shop, distribution of manpower and material resources, and thus affects the production performance of the enterprise on very big degree. Traditionally, facility layout depends mainly on the experience of the designer, lacking scientific analysis and calculation, the cost is high and the cycle is long. The purpose of this thesis is to study the methods and approaches that can better solve the layout design problem of manufacturing systems.First, this paper has made detailed analysis and survey of the facility layout problem. It summarizes the main element and main design principles of the problem; it gives the main procedure of manufacturing system layout design. After this, it sums up it as six types on the basis of analyzing the actual conditions, furthermore it divides the problem into two types, single line and many lines, the optimized models are constructed respectively.On this basis, the paper introduces the application of genetic algorithms on the layout design. It studies the main calculation process and strategy, also the engineering instance is given at last, and it proves that the algorithm is available and efficient. At the end, it constructs a system framework of layout design based on virtual simulation. The concept of design and the excellences are introduced; the system structure including detailed realization of every module is given. This system supports a relatively overall flow of layout design. It can realize dynamic layout through the human-computer interaction function that virtual reality simulation technology provides; and it can make up the shortage of math model layout, also it can make the best of layout expert's experience to adjust the result real-time and dynamic, reduce the cost and time greatly. Finally, it gives out a prototype of virtual layout design system based on Deneb/ENVISION.The actual application indicates that the hybrid solution is much better than traditional methods. It proves that the research has theoretic and practice significance.
