With the rapid development of computer and communication technologies, the sensor technology has developed into a new period, namely the smart and networked sensors. The intelligent technology provides a sensor a smart brain so that it has the ability of data processing. Because of the lack of communication ability, a system is called 'isolated information island'. Therefore, smart sensors should make their progress in the direction of network. It is very important for the network technology to improve the abilities of data processing and transmission of smart sensors. In this paper, the key technologies of smart networked sensors are studied, especially the design and implementation of the software and hardware of their smart networked interfaces.After the analysis of different steps of the realization of networked sensors, and the choice of a suitable developing platform, including software and hardware, for the research project, in this paper, a kind of smart networked interface is developed for smart sensors. Based on IEEE P1451 protocol and an embedded real-time multi-task operation system, a design scheme is presented for the design of such an interface.First of all, the IEEE P1451 protocol is studied, especially the definition of the network capable application processor (NCAP) in IEEE P1451.1 and the definition of the smart transducer interface module and the transducer electronic data sheet in IEEE P1451.2. By the way, an embedded network developing system, named Netbox, is selected and a hardware structure of the smart network interface of sensors is determined.Secondly, in this paper, an embedded real-time multi-task operation system is selected for the software development. A method of designing real-time multi-task is used to develop the functions of data collection, displaying and transmission of sensors on the network. In addition, a node of the sensor can become a web server, so sensors data can be browsed on Internet. Also, the function of adaptive multi-sensor can be realized by the submission of the transducer electronic data sheet (TEDS).After finishing above researches, the smart networked interface of sensors can be connected to Internet and CANBUS as a free node to send or receive message. Furthermore, it is proved by some experiments that such a smart networked interface has a good result of communication.Finally, the connection of the smart networked interface to wireless network is attempted, and a related solution is put forward. With the AT commands, a function of warnning with wireless short message has been performed. The smart networked interface of sensors accesses to the wireless network by way of TCP+IP+PPP+wireless link instead of TCP+IP+ETHERNET+internet link.
