With the rapid development of information technology today, enterprises have been brought into information analysis era with online analytical processing, data warehouse and data mining. Within a few years, data warehouse has been developed from theoretical research into very strong practical technology in the field of information management and information system developing.In early days, most enterprises applied their own management information systems and online transaction processing systems, with which enterprises accumulated lots of valuable business information. But because of the limitation of management information system, most online transaction processing systems were unable to provide sufficient support to enterprise decisions making. Therefore, in order to adapt serious market competition pressure and support the decision making, many enterprises started to build their own data warehouses.This paper is mainly concentrated on the followings:1. Reviews the historical background of enterprise management information system and data warehouse, and describes current situation of the latter's development. It's emphasized that enterprises should set up decision supporting systems based on data warehouse.2. Analyzes the principle, characteristics, system structure, basic function and relevant data concepts of the data warehouse.3. Discusses the development course of the data warehouse, implementing tactics, maintaining methods and investment repayment analysis.4. Introduces how to use SQL Server 2000 to develop the application with data warehouse and sets up management information application based on the basis of MS SQL Server Analysis Services.
