New generation's serial bus is very popular in the computer system and communications, due to the feature of fast speed and a few transmission lines. USB (Universal Serial Bus) is one of the most popular peripheral buses in the computer architecture now. It has many advantages such as fast speed, plug-and-play, hot-plug, ease-to-extend, ease-to-use and self-powered. Many computer peripherals and consumer electrics communicate with each other by USB.This thesis provides the general serial bus architecture firstly, then studies the new generation's serial bus architecture which will be fast speed, integrated and intelligent in the future. According to ISO's (International Standards Organization) OSI-RM (Open Systems Interconnection Reference Model), we propose the serial bus hierarchical architecture and illustrate it by USB system architecture, USB data flow model, USB device framework and USB protocol. Based on these knowledge, we design the key circuits according with USB specification 1.x: SIE (Serial Interface Engine) and PIE (Parallel Interface Engine) in USB device. We also provide the firmware framework for USB device. Based on the circuits and firmware framework, the developers can develop USB applications conveniently.
