The study, application and exploitation of Multimedia flight Simulation System are important task for the development and production of military equipments at present. As an important part, the multimedia simulation of 3D Digital Terrain must be done. Connection to the engineering application, by using the technology of the Virtual Reality to deal with the data which came from the GIS, the aircraft Multimedia Flight Simulation System has been simulated which simulate the real 3-d digital terrain and use the result to the Flight Simulation System. The main results and achievements are as follows:1) We can realize the content of the more pop 3-D digital map today, realize how to use it in resource manager, Education, military affairs and so on. In this paper, we emphasize how to combine the 3-D GIS and the technologies of visual reality.2) We know the data structure of the digital elevation model such as DEM and DED, achieve the method of the research on coding to the model of the 3-D digital terrain and also found a logical structure about the 3-D digital terrain;3) Programming by Visual C++ and OpenGL, we realize to read the data of DEM and use them to rebuild a real digital terrain. By this way, we can use the standard data of terrain in the terrain mapping industry;4) By using the technology of LOD, Mipmapping, terrain division etc and also optimizing the manage of the scene data-base, we can dynamically attemper a big terrain which used in the flight simulation;5) Base on the elevation data of real terrain, by amen the scene data-base, we can dynamically amend the terrain;6) Work out the visual 3-D digital terrain simulation system;The investigation in this paper produce the information of 3-D terrain data in the 3-D GIS by using the technology in Visual Reality, rebuild the real terrain. A series of technical problem is solved. The combines of GIS and virtual reality have supply a more trusty theory for the research of the flight simulation system.
