Water pollution is one of the most serious environmental problems in China. It is an important task for water resources protection to enhance management and prevent water pollution. With the increasing deterioration of water quality, more advanced water environment management is needed. The appearance of various Management Information Systems(MIS), especially the development of Geographical Information System (GIS) , deeply accelerates the development of Water Quality Management Information System(WQMIS). It has become a hot topic for water management and planning to establish WQMIS based on the technology of GIS.Based on the theory of MIS, GIS and DBS, combined with the advanced theory of water quality evaluation and the trend analysis models and water quality models, and benefited from foreign successful experience, this thesis established a countrywide WQMIS. With Visual Basic6.0, Access2003 and MapInfo-MapX, the WQMIS achieves functions of inputting information, treating data, searching information, outputting results and system management considering roundly water quality management requirements, standing by such principles as science, practicability, unification, expansibility. At the same time, this system has the characteristics of friendly interfaces and simple operation by using OOP and GUI technology.The system has been applied to the management of 167 key water quality stations.The results show that WQMIS runs well and can provide scientific and efficient information for water quality managers and relative departments. Accordingly, they can put forward protection measurement to improve management and decision level.
