In contrast to conventional track-while-scan radars with mechanically scanned antennas, phased array radars have the capability to switch the direction of the radar beam very quickly without inertia. The measurements from phased array radar can contribute to many application fields such as data and intelligence process, radar performance evaluation, etc. However, it often costs more than we can bear to obtain phased array radar measurements. It is necessary to model and simulate the phased array radar. This paper lays a strong emphasis on the search and simulation technology of phased array radar.According to operational theory of phased array radar, this paper focuses on the functional modeling and simulation techniques. It contains three parts as follows. Firstly, beam arrangement technology of phased array radar is studied in sin coordinate, and this technology is easy to realize for a given phased array radar. Secondly, parameter optimization in the search mode of phased array radar is surveyed. The criterion for optimum choice of parameters is given respectively with different conditions (enough time and energy of radar for search or not) and applied to choose the optimum parameters for the required radar performance. Thirdly, a function simulation model of phased array radar is realized which consists of three parts (search model, track model and schedule model) and the simulation results prove the validity of the model of phased array radar.
