As one of the three major platforms of Java, J2ME is targeted to resource-constrained devices like mobile phones and personal digital assistants. In today's e-business world mobile phones are becoming more and more prevalent, which brings the trend of accessing from mobile phones various services on the Internet. Web Services is the next stage of evolution for e-business. Collaborating Web Services are platform and language independent. Web Services allows just-in-time integration of applications, and provides applications high extensibility. For their advantages, J2ME and Web Services are adopted in the research and development work of our mobile e-business system. This mobile auction system is built on J2ME and Web Services technologies. J2ME technology is used to develop the mobile client (the three basic elements of mobile application development: UI, I/O, and network connection), and Web Services to achieve the communication between client and server. This thesis is focused on the following topics:J2ME technology, mainly about its architecture;Web Services technology and how it is used on the server side;Taking the Mobile Auction System for an example, explains the main aspects in mobile application development.Explains in detail the implementation of the Mobile Auction System: development and deployment of Web Services, UI development, and some special concerns. This thesis is organized as follows:Firstly, the background of the thesis is explained; Secondly, after a relatively comprehensive introduction to J2ME and Web Services technologies, the typical steps of mobile application development and the requirement analysis of this project are discussed; Thirdly, it explains how the Mobile Auction System is implemented by showing some exact code segments. At last, the current development work is summarized, and some suggestions for later development are offered.
