In this thesis, we propose circuit structure and VLSI implementation of a 4-bit high speed and low power embedded microcontroller (MCU4). Not only has it the advantage of favorable performance, high speed, low power and good compatibility, but also be possessed of abundant resource, nicer instruction system and advanced develop tool. Therefore, the function of the product is more powerful, the difficulty of programming is lower, and the development of the product is much easier and more effective. This chip can implement the function of original imported chip used in remote control completely and can substitute the imported chip. According to the popular top-down IC design method nowadays, the thesis introduces the 4-bit microcontroller design from system design, module design, instruction system and their execute timing, synthesis and P&R to some details. It uses PIC, MCS-51, KS series microcontroller for reference and its instruction system is similar to PIC16C5X. It adopts RISC, two level pipeline, two data buses and combination logic technology and makes itself have the advantages of high speed and low power. This microcontroller has multi-clock system---four clocks to choose through the program, and has three states: normal, sleep and stop. This microcontroller has abundant resources with 4K×8 ROM and 512×4 RAM. In addition, on the base of using Samsung KS series for reference, we adopt reference instruction (REF). When some instructions repeat many times in the program, we can put them in a specified ROM location and then execute them through REF instruction with only one byte, so it can save ROM and increase program length relatively. MCU4 has 104 instructions, in which 48 instructions are related to REF.In the thesis, we begin with the system idea of designing MCU4. We then progress to a brief discuss of the structure and detail of all modules in the system, in which we emphasize the discussion of the design of ALU, Registers, Timer0/1, WDT and LCD driver circuit. Then we go on to discuss the method and the flow of system synthesis and Place&Route. Now we have completed the design and implementation of the core of the 4-bit microcontroller. From the result of stimulation and validation, this microcontroller realizes the function expected and achieves the design requirement.
