With the great development of Internet, We are faced with the most serious problem for the lacking of IP address and the records greatly increased in the router tables since we began using Internet Protocol version 4 from the 1970s.To solve the problem, IETF(Internet Engineering Task Force) has designed and perfected the new Internet Protocol version 6. IPv6 has taken advantages of IPv4 and overcome the faults in IPv4 by offering great IP address space and with built-in security and mobility. We are not concentrated on whether we should transit IPv4 to IPv6 now. The most important thing is that how we can gradually transit IPv4 to IPv6 without damage to the present network and try our best to decrease the total cost. This dissertation discussed the IPv6 and compared it with the IPv4. Some new features of IPv6 and standards about it are mentioned in this dissertation. The dissertation mainly discussed the transition mechanism from IPv4 to IPv6, and several more popular techniques, such as Dual-Stack, Tupnel and Network Address Translation-Protocol Translation, and etc. Then, we built a mixed test network of IPv4/IPv6 with five computers under Windows platform, tested and analyzed corresponding transitions by changing the structure of the test network. After thinking that Dual-Stack and Tunnel are more popular in the beginning of transiting IPv4 to IPv6 because there are mainly IPv4 nodes in Internet now, we chiefly tested and analysed ISATAP and 6to4. Also considering that NAT-PT will play important role in the end of transiting from IPv4 to IPv6 for the lacking of available IPv4 address, we stressly tested and analyzed NAT-PT.In the end, we applied and got a block of IPv6 address from CERNET (China Education and Research Network) IPv6 testbed. With the applied IPv6 address block and the Tunnel Broker service provided by CERNET IPv6 testbed, we got access to the CERNET IPv6 testbed and 6bone (International IPv6 testbed) through a server acted as a router with Windows Server 2003. All the computers in our lab can also get access to the IPv6 testbed and 6bone by using Dual-Stack and Tunnel, and etc.
