With the development of Internet, Internet based on IPv4 has exposed much disadvantage in practical application, such as the address space exhausting day by day, service quality, net security, etc. These questions restrict the development of Internet badly, and these questions are solved completely and effectively only through the construction of next generation Internet, so IPv6 has arisen. As the next edition of Internet protocol, IPv6 replacing IPv4 becomes inevitably trend of technology, the new characteristic of IPv6 protocol will offer broader prospect and perfect support for application and development of the next generation Internet.Internet is close to also already 10 in development of our country, the network scale is already pretty considerable, needs to reform a commercial net from IPv4 for IPv6 is also difficult. But grave IPv4 address shortage problem is threatening us in grave field, sustained development affecting the IP net's especially gravely. Population base of our country is very big , the economic growth tendency is fine , the scale fixing telecommunication networks and the scale moving telecommunication networks already occupy second worlds. IPv4 has no way to satisfy the need that our country high speed develops. But from talking on the technology , not hesitating to adopt private address, can resolve the part address problem by the fact that NAT changes, large amount of practice already indicates way, this does not finish being. The best way is to adopt the IPv6 technology in time. As the next generation of agreement, IPv6 overcomes the shortcomings, all predecessors IPv4 and next-generation networks was proposed many effective improvement in the address space, service quality, safety and mobility etc, has obvious advantages more stable and perfect communication. Tens of thousands of hosts and routers on the Internet and other network equipments are running IPv4 protocol. IPv4 replaced by IPv6 couldn't be brought to success in one night that, they will exist within a very long time. IPv6 isn't simple upgrading edition of IPv4, because of the difference of head characteristic and address format, they are unable to be totally compatible. It must be solved how to transit to IPv6 gradually and smoothly. Campus network is also confronted with the same question. In this situation, the research on the smooth trasmition from IPv4 to IPv6 is of necessity.In the thesis, we compare IPv4 with IPv6, introduce the fundament characteristics of IPv6, analyse some varieties of familiar transition technique: tunnel technique, Dual stack and NAT-PT Network Address Translation Protocol Translation. Combined with the campus network dispose, these transition techniques are operated reasonably, to apply the IPv6 compatibly in current IPv4 network. In the future, the users could connect mutually between IPv4 and IPv6.
