With the rapid expansion and increasing applications of Internet network in the worldwide, the contradictions of IP addresses running out become more prominent, as well as to solve the design flaws of IPv4, Internet Engineering Task Force has developed a next-generation Internet protocol IPv6, but there are considerable differences between IPv4 and IPv6,and a number of protocols and applications are based on IPv4 networks, therefore, to use the new IPv6 replace the old IPv4 must exist a transition period.To solve these issues we must find out a transitional mechanism, and realize a transition technology that can migrate between IPv4 and IPv6,the current popular technology is the dual protocol stack.Layer three switches are mainly used in a variety of medium and large enterprise networks, the park or the importance of networking equipment in metropolitan area networks,and a layer three switch which surpports dual-stack will be an important network equipment,that can be applied to network transition from IPv4 to IPv6. layer three switches will play an important role in smooth transition from IPv4 network to IPv6 network.Chapter 1 of this thesis outlines a brief summary of the research status of IPv6 at home and abroad, and make the purpose and content of study ;chapter 2 gives the detailed analysis of the current transition technologies from IPv4 to IPv6, and compares their technical characteristics,advantages and disadvantages in detail;chapter 3 introduces the hardware design of layer three switch,which is the platform of IPv4/IPv6 dual stack;chapter 4,first introduces the overall software architecture design of IPv4/IPv6 dual-stack , and then specifically introduces the design and implementation of the IPv6 protocol stack; chapter 5,IPv4/IPv6 dual-stack will be implemented successfully transplanted to the carrier layer three switches platform for IPv4/IPv6 dual stack verified by experiments, and made a detailed analysis of experimental data, the results show that the dual-stack IPv4/IPv6 stable, fully meet the requirements of the indicators ,and can be put into use; chapter 6 summarizes the full text.
