At the beginning of 20 century, Taylor initiated the new epoch of modern business enterprise management with his "science management". Along with the application of modern computer technology in the manufacture enterprise, lots of management information systems (MIS) which associate with the enterprise management practice have emerged. These MISs could help the professional managers and the leader of the enterprise make correct decision quickly and figure out the weakness in the business process. Every department of the enterprise saves the substantive data about employee's activity and knowledge in an isolated system in terms of different functions. In this way, the enterprise could establish a stratagem information and knowledge database at the layer of execution. It helps manager understand the running status of enterprise and the possible result from different angles. The data collected from different department, which appears no relationship at first sight, could become information useful at some time after the procession. The application of MIS in an enterprise make the enterprise become more transparent, the manager could acquire any information he need at any time and could make important decision and plan according to fact, instead of relying on the estimation and guess. It could enable manager find out and get rid of the exist hidden problems during manufacture process early.On the other hand, more and more MISs with different functions and data management systems are installed in the enterprise, thus a series of problems that should be solved urgently arise. For example, these MISs generate enormous data stream, these data processes lack transparency and the MISs form "information isolated island" from each other since the generated data could not be shared with other systems. The bad effects can easily disturb the production and the working management of enterprise and decrease the working efficiency. To solve these problems, many enterprises use the product data management(PDM) system to integrate all the result data and processes generated by application system. In fact, it is a collective solving project for the integration of information system. PDM technology bases on the network and database and integrates all the "information isolated islands" generated by the computer system application during the product design,analysis,manufacture,the programming of technics and quality control etc. It attempts to unify the data during a product's life cycle and has solved the bottle-neck problem with the application of CAD/CAPP/CAM. Every CAD/CAPP/CAM system on the PDM integration platform can obtain the information they need from PDM and these systems store their result data in PDM. PDM technology realize the integration of "3C", so it is the integration platform of CAD/CAPP/CAM. Production management system is one of the important parts of CIMS. And much information it required comes from CAD/CAPP/CAM system. With PDM, the CAD/CAPP/CAM could transmit the information to the production management system timely, and the information of production management system generated delivers to the CAD/CAPP/CAM by PDM too. In this way, the information about product design, technics and product structure that production management system requires can be obtained from the shared database of PDM and the result data and documents of the production management system generated store in the shared database of PDM. The store model is as follows: the documents of production planning, as a whole, save in the electronic storage of PDM. The planning documents includes the procession time of each part, restricted relationship of each working procedure and other information. Th document is associated with corresponding CAD/CAPP/CAM. As a whole, the document and its corresponding CAD/CAPP/CAM counterpart go through the version management of document and life cycle management.
