GIS deals with two types of data: spatial data and attribute data. The former mainly refers to data that is closely related to spatial position and spatial relation; and the latter refers to non-spatial data among geographical elements. In earlier application system, the generally adopted model is to store these two types of data separately. The attribute data are stored into RDBMS. While the spatial data are stored as files with their original structure unchanged, because of their particularity. Thus the application system is constructed on the basis of relevance between spatial data files and RDBMS. However, this kind of separately storing model applies only to stand-alone application in the field of geography. With the development of GIS into GIS C/S solutions, problems inevitably arise for the managing model of spatial data files in aspects such as datashare, network communications, combined control and safe resumption mechanism of data, and so on.Based on study of spatial database and related technology, on the platform of Oracle Spatial plus MapX of Maplnfo, and against the background of developing Chongqing Expressway Comprehensive Management System, this thesis elaborates on the making of electronic map and its loading to database, the storing model of spatial data as well as the adding, amending, deleting, selecting, and inquiring of spatial objects. It also lists the basic approaches to develop GIS project based on such a spatial data storing model at length. The GIS developed with the combination of MapX controls and object language, realizes the integral saving and management of spatial data and attribute data, and theoretically ensures the datashare and the integrality of data. Such a system has been applied to the daily management of Chongqing expressway, is proved to be of active contribution to the work efficiency and effect. It will surely promote the development of ITS in the future.
