World Wide Web is a huge distributed information system which owns billions of web pages and millions of users, so the interoperability is the key to its success. How to effectively organize all kinds of information resources on internet has become an important problem in the development of digital libraries, from which comes up another problem - the interoperability of information systems and knowledge organize systems. Digital librarians attach importance to these problems and have put forward new technologies and slanders to solve them.This essay analyses the technology and development of the interoperability of knowledge organize systems , mainly introduces XML Topic Maps, presents a system framework which helps realize the interoperability of knowledge organize systems based on XTM Topic Maps, and experiments the realization of the XTM-based search engine.This essay includes four parts.The first part gives a gentle introduction to the latest knowledge organize systems of digital libraries.After analyzing the interoperability of information systems, the second part goes further to explain the technology and development of the interoperability of knowledge organize systems.The third part introduces such metadata as Resource Description Framework (RDF) and SHOE, which are both the describing tools and operation basis ofknowledge organize systems.The fourth part, the main part of the essay, focuses on XTM Topic Maps, presenting some interoperability examples and systems which have been realized by the use of XTM. Then, the essay introduces an interoperability model, examines the realization of the XTM-based search engine. Finally, it points out some shortcomings of this experiment and sums up the development of the interoperability of knowledge organize systems.
