As industrialization of mass media began to accelerate since 1990s, competitions in the field of the press have become more fierce than before and great changes have taken place in newspapers. These competitions began in big cities, resulting in the wave of popularization in news reporting, with news of every conceivable kind from various media to cater to and entertain the common people. Not a new thing in the field of the press, popularization has taken up an important role in the industry of news reporting in the world today. This thesis aims at an investigation of the origin and a tentative study of the future of popularization in news reporting. Part 1. The Origin and Present State of Popularization in News Reporting: This part starts from a historical discussion of the origin of popularization both within and outside China, continues with a list of features of popularization in the news reporting today and then tries to identify the significance of popularized news reporting in the press today. It means to lead to the following discussion of its reasons and development. Part 2. A Discussion of the Reasons in the Popularization of News Reporting: Various complicated reasons can be found to be responsible for this phenomenon , the accelerate of democratization, the emergence of sense of market and urbanization of the society all contribute to the popularization of media in China, popularization of news reporting is also the result of market orientation of media owing to the economic reform. Of course, the demand of the people for pluralistic culture and life in the transformational period is one of the interior reasons. The competition in interest news reporting also finds itself in the promotion of popularization, which cannot be found in the western history of the press. Part 3. The Social Background of Popularization in News Reporting: As a kind of social and cultural phenomenon, popularization in news reporting can be traced backed to its social background . Popularization of news reporting in China both shares and distinguishes itself from that of the west concerning social background. But in China,things can be more complicated such as pluralism among the audience ,vagueness in the distinction of social classes etc. Part 4. The development of popularization in news reporting: Orientation of the press is determined by the nature of media. We should be on the lookout of the exclusive market orientation of popularization in news reporting whose emergence and existence will contradict the social and cultural demand of the Chinese people. At present time, many researchers and newsmen in press circles appeal for the establishment of serious mainstream media, but , of course, without leaving it only to theoretical discussions, the current social and cultural situation in China should also be taken into our consideration of the future of news reporting in our country. The socialist market economic system is now under way in China, and market will be the final factor in the development of media. Though enjoying much vitality now, popularization of news reporting in China cannot let itself go freely, owing to its own system of the press. So the divergence and infiltration of "popular(soft)" and "serious(hard)" news, will surely be the future development of Chinese mass media.
