With the rapid development of laser technology, more and more new and advanced laser devices have emerged. To protect people and optical sensors from being damaged by lasers optical limiters are in intense demand. As promising optical limiting materials, C60 and related materials have attracted much attention. In this thesis, the history, current research status and research outlook of C60 and related materials have been reviewed. In order to obtain composites of C60 and polymers that possess superior optical limiting properties and can be used in actual devices, we have designed and synthesized novel C60 derivatives with better electron-withdrawing properties which may facilitate the photoinduced charge transfer process. In order to overcome the drawback of phase separation of composites and to get homogeneous systems with superior optical limiting properties, we plan to incorporate C60 derivatives into selected polymer systems, which are PPVs, PTs, and PFs. This part of work is now in progress. Moreover, one novel photochromic compound: 3,3-bis(4-methoxybenzyl)-3H-naphtho[2,1-b]pyran has been synthesized, which may be used in optical lenses to protect human eyes from being damaged by ultraviolet lights.
