Measuring log volume is always a key part in many departments, such as forest industry. The manual measurement has been adopted for a long time, which is greatly affected by artificial factor resulting in low measuring precision and low working efficiency, so the measurement of log volume becomes a bottleneck problem in many industrial procedures. In addition, the working environment of measuring log volume is bad. In order to solve all the problems above, the dissertation presents using the technique of computer vision to fulfill the automatic measurement of log volume.Computer vision originated from statistic pattern recognition theory in this century, simulates some functions of creatures' vision with computer. In 1980s, the theory of computer vision and the research on algorithm developed very fast, there came out many new concepts and new methods. Formerly three dimension information was obtained via processing on two dimension image, while this time kinds of invariable features were obtained on the basis of gray scale / surface direction to perform area separation. The area of computer vision techniques is wide, including image processing techniques and pattern recognition techniques. And also, more and more artificial intelligence techniques were employed in. Based on analyzing the developed of image processing and recognition, and on outlining the present methods, the dissertation illuminated the present level of the computer vision techniques.This measuring system is to recognize the log' s cross-section and the log' s axial profile in the image through the processing on the images, get the area value of cross-section and log length, so have the volume value by a certain formula for volume.The dissertation designed the software architecture of log volume computer vision automatic measuring system, programmed the software, demonstrated the measuring principles of the system at length, and proved the feasibility and rationality of the system design.The design of the log volume measuring system by computer vision is reasonable, and measuring principles has a sound theoretical basis. The hardware of the system is simple and practical, while the software interface is easy to operate. The experiment results demonstrate that the measuring precision of the system meets the design requirement, and the system has a high practicality and is greatly worth introducing.
