Decision Support System (DSS) is put forward without the effective support on decision-making provided by Management Information System (MIS). DSS oriented to decision-making is used in helping the supervisors make decision, so its data processing places emphasis on analysis. Traditional DSS consists in the transaction processing environment for the sake of its data management by means of the database which is mainly used in transaction processing. The application of database technology to Online Transaction Processing (OLTP) gains great success, but it gives an unsatisfactory support on analytical processing all along due to the different character between transaction processing and analytical processing. The role of DSS has been restricted because traditional DSS is established in the transaction processing environment. DSS will play an active role by recombining primitive data in the databases and forming an integrative environment oriented to analysis, which brings on the emergence of data warehouse. Data warehouse can meet the requirements of the database management subsystems of DSS and organize primitive data in the databases to analytical data suited to administrative decision. With the emergence of data warehouse, data mining technology and OLAP technology also come out. These two technologies provide the powerful support for data analysis. Thus, DSS based on data warehouse integrates many kinds of information disposal technology, data warehouse technology, data mining technology and OLAP technology included. It is a new form of DSS and a perfect system assisting corporative administrators with correct decision made. The application of DSS based on data warehouse stands at an underway stage, so the theoretical research on the system will make sense for practice.This thesis firstly introduces the background of DSS, the definition of DSS, the architecture of traditional DSS and the development of DSS, and points out the development trend of DSS which improves its functions by integrating arisen decision-supporting technology into it. Then, It respectively discussed the technologies related to DSS based on data warehouse, including data warehouse technology, data mining technology and OLAP technology. In part of the datawarehouse technology, the background, the concept, the architecture, the data structure, the data mode, the pivotal technology and the establishing process of data warehouse are introduced. With regard to the data mining technology, the thesis sets forth the concept and characteristic, object mined, typical methods and tools used of data mining, and specifies the process of data mining. The concept and characteristic, the multiple dimensional data structure, the data processing mode and analytical technique of OLAP technology are depicted concerning the OLAP technology, and the architecture and data organization of the OLAP system are presented in detail. Based on the discussed above, the thesis establishes the architecture of DSS based on data warehouse, discusses the relation between data warehouse and DSS, and talks over some problems such as the component of data warehouse, data warehouse function, the solution program of data warehouse, data mining based on data warehouse.DSS based on data warehouse has a wider application future. A lot of corporations overseas have acquired very high rewards for the establishment of the application systems based on data warehouse, and there is a beginning at home. Based on the theoretically discussed above, the thesis gives the architecture and functions of Customer Analysis System (CAS) based on data warehouse. The application of CAS in analysis of customer structure, customer buying pattern is discussed.
