| With the rapid development of the network technology, on-line catalog and Web OPAC have been playing more and more important roles in library automatic information system. The aim of the former is to build and share the data resource which lies at the center of catalogs, and that of the later is to let readers access data resource from Web.Cataloging subsystem is the base of ordering subsystem and circulation subsystem and public inquiring subsystem. It is the core of library automatic information system. This thesis, in which the design of cataloging subsystem is probed, emphasizes on Z39.50 and on-line catalog, and offers preliminarily the process of Z39.50 client being designed.This thesis gives a discussion about three tier model, JDBC technology, Servlet technology and OAS. In this thesis, library public information inquiring system is designed and developed. For this design, OAS and its Jservlet cartridge are used as service platform and main programming interface respectively, and JDBC is applied to access Oracle database. JDBC and Servlet both belong to Java technology, so it is most possible for the software developed by them to extend and to be reused and to have nothing with the platform. Mechanism of multi-thread process of Servlet and its still staying at the core of system when loaded and the state information being stored after connection, accelerate the responding velocity of the system. In connecting with Oracle database seamlessly and quickly, OAS has such particular features as accessing Oracle database directly through Web Request Broker ,so it works more faster than any other Web servers. As a good application developing platform, OAS makes full use of the advantages of B/S architecture and three tier model. With the system and the data security offered by Oracle and OAS, and with the characteristics of Servlet while it is running in JVM ,the security of the system and the integrity of the data can be well guaranteed.
