ObjectiveThe purpose of this study was to explore the impact of medical workplace violence ( including witnessing and suffering from medical workplace violence) on professional attitude of student nurses.MethodsWith convenience sampling method, 691 student nurses completed the questionnaires after ending their one year's practice in hospital. Investigate instruments included demographic questionnaire, Professional Self-Concept of Nurses Instrument (PSCNI) , medical workplace violence scale and one open-ended question'which ideas did you have after witnessing or suffering from medical workplace violence?'. Quantitative data was analyzed by Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) 13.0 . Qualitative information was analyzed by coding and classification, and then extracted the subjects .Results1. In this study, the scores of Professional Self-Concept of Nurses Instrument(PSCNI) for student nurses were total scores (89.84±8.85), communication(15.73±2.10), leadership (11.75±1.64), flexible (21.26±2.59), skill(16.09±1.99), satisfactory (25.01±3.84).2. During their one year's practice in hospital, 53.88% nursing students witnessed medical workplace violence, of which 28.16% nursing students witnessed physical assault, 45.36% nursing students witnessed emotional abuse, 28.01% nursing students witnessed threat, 11.87 % nursing students witnessed verbal sexual harassment, 6.85% nursing student witnessed sexual assault. 19.94% nursing students have suffered from medical workplace violence, of which 3.60% nursing students suffered from physical assault, 17.20% nursing students suffered from emotional abuse, 6.00% nursing students suffered from threat, 1.70% nursing students suffered from verbal sexual harassment and 1.10% nursing student suffered from sexual assault.3. The main influencing factors of professional self-concept for student nurses were: total scores : admission voluntary choice, educational level , whether or not suffered from violence ; Leadership: admission voluntary choice; flexible: educational level, admission voluntary choice, whether or not suffered from violence; skill: admission voluntary choice, whether or not suffered from violence; communication: admission voluntary choice, whether or not suffered from violence; satisfaction : educational level, the voluntary choice ,whether or not witnessed the violence.4. From the results of open-ended question'which ideas did you have after witnessing or suffering from medical workplace violence?', four main themes were extracted :low occupational status, lack of career security, career satisfaction decreased, willingness to change jobs increased.ConclusionStudent nurses in general tended to a positive professional attitude. Gender, educational level, admission voluntary choice were influencing factors of student nurses'professional attitude. student nurses were high-risk groups of Medical workplace violence, witnessed and suffered from medical workplace violence would affect the professional attitude of student nurses. It is necessary to take measures to reduce the occurrence of the medical workplace violence, and enhance student nurses'ability to cope with violence through education and training.
