| Luteal phase defect (LPD) refers to the corpus luteum insufficiency when the follicle forms the Corpus lutein after ovulation the major meaning refers the corpus lutein cells in the luteal phase synthesis and secretion of both oestrogen and profesterone, so the endometrium shows irregular ripening with menoxenia, and the consequent will influence the implantation of the fertilized ovum or result in obortion in former pregnancy phase. In this paper, the discussion about the pathogen, pathogenetion mechanism and treatment of LPD that disperse plentiful documents of traditional Chinese medical (TCM) in different dynasties are reviewed . And the knowledge of both TCM and Western mendicine about pathogenetic mechanism and curative effect which has developed during the newly years is summarized.Deficiency of kidney is common on luteal phase defect. The study was in order to evaluate therapeutic effect of Gui Shen Wan and search rule of determination of treatment based in pathogenesis obtained through differentiation of symptoms and signs.The study collected 30 patients of asthenia of kidney of Luteal phase defect. All patients received a course of three menstrual cycles. The result showed that the effective rate of Gui Shen Wan is 86.67%. After treated with Gui Shen Wan, luteal phase of BBT was prolonged and ascending velocity of BBT after ovulation was accelerated.Owing to the results of clinical and the experimental research, we condiser that Gui Shen Wan probably strengthen corpus lutein and promote progesterone secretion through regulating the disorderly function of hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian axis. Gui Shen Wan produces a good curative effect and has no harmful effect. At the same time, it is proved that it could improve the function of endocrine. So, it could be considered that Gui Shen Wan is an efficient medicine for menoxenia patients diagnosed as "deficiency of kidney".
