Objective The purpose of this study is to confirm the structure factors of Nurse Job Satisfaction,to develop the scale of Nurse Job Satisfaction,and to analyze the status of Nurse Job Satisfaction in Shanghai.The local norm of Shanghai is established based on the average outcomes of all subjects.Methods By literature analyzing and expert consuling,the primary scale composed of 10 factors and 56 items is formed.Tested on 135 nurses ,item analysis and exploratory factor analysis are used to develop the Nurse Job Satisfaction Scale composed of 8 factors and 38 items.The sample of total 1185 nurses from 13 general hospitals in Shanghai city are tested by the developed Nurse Job Satisfaction Scale.The reliability and validity of the scale are also tested and the local norm of Shanghai is established on the base of investigation and analysis. Statistic methods such as analysis of variance are adopted to analyze the status of Nurse Job Satisfaction in Shanghai.Results (1)The Nurse Job Satisfaction Scale is developed,with good reliability and validity,composed of 8 factors (administration, work loads, relationships with colleagues, work itself, salary and fringe benefit, professional opportunities, recognition, balance between family and work) and 38 items. (2)The general level of the Nurse Job Satisfaction belongs to middle-level in Shanghai.The high satisfaction level locates on the factors of relationships with colleagues, balance between family and work,administration,and recognition,and the lower-level locates on the factors of salary and fringe benefit, professional opportunities, work loads and work itself.(3)There are differences among the variables such as age,education,job time,section,title,hospital level on the Nurse Job Satisfaction. (4)The local norm of Shanghai is established.Conclusions The development of Nurse Job Satisfaction Scale,as well as the establishment of local norm of Shanghai might not only help to evaluate nurses'job satisfaction,but also provide assistance for the nurse administrator to develop strategies as to improve job satisfaction.
