PurposeThis study is to make an investigation,by going deep into the social causes of their success in winning the Nightingale medal,of how the few nurses have become outstanding figures in Nursing.Are their development,success and road of accomplishment in any way related to social development? By exploring the development of the Nightingale medal,the author is making a study of some group characteristics of the Nightingale medal winners,so as to provide some basic ideas of fostering future nursing academic or discipline leaders.Objects of StudyThe basic information of the 43 Nightingale medal laureates between 1983 and 2005 are the basis of this study.Sources of Information1.The original data are collected and synthesized by entrusting the Information Center of The Chinese Library National.2.Books and other publications including newspapers,journals and magazines on the Nightingale medal winners.MethodRetrieval of literature including both paper and electronic publicationsResults1.Group characteristics of the Nightingale medal winners.To be concrete,Motivation for success not from intelligence but from soul,morality by sacrifice,the mission and responsibility of saving one's life,the concern capability based on nursing technique, practicing experience with philosophy of creation,good administrative capability,and longer working lifetime.2.The general information of the 43 Nightingale medal winners.To be concrete,Space features: More such people were born in most populated,economically developed and fast social developing regions.The study shows that most of them came from east China prior to west China.The characteristic feature of age:The maximum age is 81,and the minimum value is 27,and the mean is 59.72.Educational background:Most of them did not receive the degree of baccalaureate.Professional technique duty:58.1 percent of them belong to senior professional duty.Academic duty:60.46 percent of them held the post of director or secretary in Nursing Association of our Country.Administrative duty:They held some administrative duty.Among them,37.2 percent of them are a superintendent of nursing department.3.The epoch background of the 43 Nightingale medal winners.To be concrete,before building up the People's Republic of China,Chinese people had lived in war and Chinese nurses had lower social status.From building up the People's Republic of China to starting Culture Revolution,nursing education system formed single lower-lever education style.Among Culture Revolution,the quality and quantity of nursing staff was lower and nursing discipline was stopped.After Opening Reform,our country had great progress in economic,political and cultural aspects and so on.4.The social background of the 43 Nightingale medal winners.To be concrete,Family Environment:The home styles of the 43 Nightingale medal winners are more doctor and teacher than else.The environment of School:Those schools located in some most populated, economically developed and fast social developing regions,which had very severe administrative measures.School and hospital environment:the maximum of our winners working in schools is 6,and the minimum is 1,and the mean is 1.98.Our winners most came from general hospitals.No winner came from nursing school.What's more,the longest our winners' working lifetime is 61-year and the shortest is 10-year,and the mean is 39.49-year.Conclusion1.The basic causes of success of the Nightingale medal Laureates in China.To be concrete,older, longer working lifetime and excellent nurses will probably win the Nightingale medal.Some good nurses with higher education foundation,senior professional duty,and greatly high academic or social achievement can maybe win the medal.In addition,some superintendents of nursing department would be the medal winners in future.2.The influence of social environment toward our winners' development and success.In detail, some of most populated,economically developed and fast social developing regions have many geography advantages.Family education maybe exerts a subtle influence on children's character,thinking,etc.Some schools which had very severe administrative measures will probably foster more excellent nursing staff.In addition to those,more winners in future may come from many general hospitals.3.The effect of macroscopic conditions to our winners' development and success.To be concrete, social atmosphere:9 winners thought they were stimulated by timeworn medal conditions and the poor' unbearable indisposition.7 winners considered some kindhearted nurses affected their dream of being a person on saving one's life.The epoch background:patriotic passion in some wars spurred our winner into save one's life.Communication with a few of foreign countries:It will benefit our nursing staffto improve themselves soon and shorten disparities with western countries with advanced nursing level.Suggestions1.We should advocate truth,goodness and beauty in nursing education.2.Ministry of Public Health will make many good measures which can equilibrate nursing education level between schools and colleges,and shorten disparities between different regions.3.We should build up consecratory and creative social
