Objective:To establish the model of osteoarthritis(OA) on rabbits and inject medical ozone into knee joints,to explore the effect of medical ozone on the cartilage of OA.Method:After the OA model was duplicated by injecting papain into right knee joints ,Thirty adult rabbits were randomly divided into three groups :A( group air), B(group O2—O34O) and C(groupO2—O380)(n=10 in each group),left knee joints was the control group.Air,40mg/LO3 and 80mg/LO3 were respectively injected in right knee joints of group A,B and C at the third, fifth day after the model was be successfully made. Joint range of motion was estimated when the model was made and before the rabbits was killed. The medial condyle cartilage of tibia was excised for the observation by naked eyes and microscope. Results: (1)Joint range of motion in group A,B and C were significantly lower than the control group( P < 0. 01), Joint range of motion in group A has no significant change(P>0.05)after the air was injected in,whlie group B and C became much wider (P<0.01)after medical ozone was injected in; (2)when observated by naked eyes and under microscope, great degeneration can be find in group A and C,much serious than group B.(3)The Mankin's index of groupA B and C was significantly higher than control group( P < 0. 01) ,The Mankin's index of group B was significantly lower than group A and C. (4)The expression of MMP-1 in groupA B and C were much higher than group A( P < 0. 05);The expression of MMP-1 in group B was much lower than group A and C.There are no significant differences between group A and C in the Mankin's index or in the expression of MMP-1: Conclusion: 40mg/L O3 can less the joint range of motion of OA rabbit, reduce the expression of MMP-1,and delay the process of degeneration of the OA cartilage but 80mg/L O3 only lesse the joint range of motion.
