The concept of competency was brought forth firstly by McClelland in 1973. Competency is a set of glossary specifying the potential special characters that some individuals possess and therefore promote in excellent job performances. Moreover after the concept of competency had been put forth,many researches and applications were mainly carried out in some fields, such as sociology, management, psychology, especially in human resource management . And it has made great effects in selecting and training employees. With the development of the vocation of nursing, nurses are required to master many skills. How to train and select the excellent nurses? The studies of competency give us some theories and methods to solve the problem. However, there have been few related researches on the nurses'competency in China and seldom on abroad. Therefore, the study of the nurses'competency can be of real significance in nursing psychology theoretically and practically, and may promote the nurses'training for school, nurses'selecting for hospital. This study chooses nurses working in hospital as objectives, adopts the qualitative and quantitative methods, such as technical literature, open coding, axial coding, correlate analysis, behavior event interview (BEI), questionnaires factor-analysis and ANOVA analysis etc. This study defines the concept of nurses'competency, explores the structure of nurses'competency, forms the questionnaire of nurses'competency and analyses the characteristic of nurses'competency.The result of this study brings about the following conclusions:1. Competency of nurses may distinguish the different features between excellent nurses and average nurses. And it has the latent, developing and lasting characteristics, which are developed on the basis of mental condition, then internalize acquired experiences and behaviors closely associated with the nurse's vocation.2. The competency of nurses includes 14 elements influencing the nurse performance. And they are the ability to organization and management, adaptability, analyzing-judgment, the ability to interpersonal harmony, problem-solving ability, empathy, self-confidence,initiative, emotion stability,impact and influence, learning appetite, role awareness, achievement orientation and the sense of profession responsibility.
