ObjectiveThe purpose of this dissertation is to explore competency model ofpsychotherapists and to validate competency model of psychotherapists. This will provide an evidence to screen and train psychotherapists and topromote professionalism of psychotherapy.Methods1. To interview 11 psychotherapeutic experts throughsemi-structured question, then to analysis interview transcripts.2. Behavior event interview(BEI) was used to study 20psychotherapists who were divided into the outstanding and the average, then BEI transcripts were coded.3. The Competence of Psychotherapist Self-Rating Form(CPSRF)was developed according to competency model of the psychotherapist, then was test reliability and validity.4. Exploratory factor analysis and structured equation model wereused to validate competency model of the psychotherapist.Results1. Length of BEI transcripts of the outstanding is not significantlydifferent from that of the average (8214.00±4047.77 words/ 9940.10±2462.64 words, t=1.15, P=0.26), Length of time of BEI of theoutstanding is not significantly different from that of theaverage(58.80±24.11 minutes/58.80±12.60minutes, t=0, P=1).2. Competencies scores using coding standard of average level ofscore show more reliability than that using coding standard ofcompetency frequencies and maximal level of score.3. Inter-Rater reliability was studied. Category Agreement(CA)was81.11%, 95.2%of Intraclass Correlation Coefficient(ICC) was more than0.4.4. There was significant difference in 10 competencies betweenmean level of competence shown by superior versus averagesubjects(P<0.05):Self-Retrospection (SRT), Self-Confidence (SCF),Empathy(EM), Professional Expertise(EXP), Conceptual Thinking(CT),Linguistic Expressing(LEX), Respecting Others(REO), DevelopingOthers(DEV), Impact and Influence(IMP), Self-Control(SCT).5. Exploratory factor analysis of the items identified that CPSRF had8 first-order factors and two second-order factors, explaining 52.1%and81.807%of the total variance respectively. 8 first-order factors werelabeled as follows: IMP(F1), EXP(F2), DEV(F3), REO(F4), SCT(F5),EM(F6), SCF(F7), SRT(F8); Two second-order factors were labeled asfollows: knowledge and skill(D1), personal trait(D2). This validatedcompetency model of the psychotherapist. 6. Two parts of competency model were tested through structuredequation model, goodness of fit indices were as follow: NNFI=0.883,NFI=0.903, CFI=0.907, RMSEA=0.091, X~2/df=-3.26.7. Internal consistency analysis showed that the Cronbachαcoefficient ranged from 0.83 to 0.95, the split-half reliability ranged from0.82 to 0.96.8. Inter-scale correlation studies showed that the correlationsbetween the 8 first-order factors and the total scores ranged from 0.260 to0.732. All the first-order factors had a higher correlation with theircorresponding second-order factor than with the other second-order factor;structural equation model(SEM) studies showed that the data fitted wellwith theory model.9. No difference of gender was found in competence ofpsychotherapists (P>0.05).Conclusions1. The competency model of psychotherapists are as follows:Self-Retrospection(SRT), Self-Confidence(SCF), Empathy(EM),Professional Expertise(EXP), Conceptual Thinking(CT), LinguisticExpressing(LEX), Respecting Others(REO), Developing Others(DEV),Impact and Influence(IMP), Self-Control(SCT).2. The competency model of the psychotherapist was divided intotwo parts: personal trait, knowledge and skill. 3. Competency assessment methods has good reliability and validity,it could be used among Chinese psychotherapists.4. CPSRF has good reliability and validity.5. The competency model of the psychotherapist is found goodconstruct validity through exploratory factor analysis.6. Competency model of the psychotherapist could be used to screenand train psychotherapists.
