Objective This research aims to explore a) the prevalence of internet addiction disorder in middle school from 12 age to 19 years old of Chongqing urban field, b) the variables related to the Internet Addiction Disorder c) the difference in cognitive appraisal orientation, coping style, mental health and family dynamic characteristics among internet addicts, Non-addicts and Non-users (Individuals who have never used the Internet) d) neuropsychological differences between internet addicts and Non-addicts.Methods 1360 middle school students were assessed using Internet Addiction Test. From this sample, 116 internet addicts (IA) , 116 non-addicts (NA) and 59 Non-Users (NU) were assessed using Revised Life Orientation Test, Symptom Checklist 90, Coping Style questionnaire, Self-rating Scale of Systematic Family Dynamics and self designed questionnaires. From the 116 IA and NA, 26 were chosen randomly from each category and they were assessed using neuropsychological tests.Results a) 39 students (2.87%) met criteria for a definite internet addiction and 122 students (8.97%) met criteria for a probable internet addiction, b) Middle school students use internet for the first time before 12 years old. c)By logistic regression analysis, we found such factors are relevant on internet addiction disorder: longer hours per week, non-Only child, non-living with parents, d) Internet addicts seemed to report more pessimistic appraisal orientation, more immature coping style, and poorer mental health situation than non-addicts.
